Byzantine Symbols/Motifs

When I say Byzantine, you say ,”WOOOHOOOO!” Sorry yet another attempt at humor.

Now we are about to wrap up the Byzantine era with their symbols and motifs! Byzantine motifs included images of Christ, Mary, the apostles, rulers, and saints. Foliage, frets, waves, geometric designs, rosettes, and animals (such as griffins) were also common motifs. Symbols found in the Byzantine era included the Byzantine Imperial Flag which depicted a two-headed bird clutching a sword and crown, the good shepherd, the lamb, and other religious saints.

Below are photos of a motif showing two griffins on a patterned blue background, the Byzantine Imperial symbol made out of gold, a peacock symbol representing eternal life, and leaf mosaic.
